This article’s focus is to analyze the current status of the Coptic community in modern Egypt. It examines matters of exclusion regarding the State in Egypt, the factors leading up to the rise of an Egyptian Coptic identity, and showcases the relationship between the Copts and the Coptic Christian Church. In addition, this article seeks to illustrate the number of factors related to state society relations, both domestic and external, which have driven the Coptic community to adopt a more insular and introspective attitude within Egypt.
