The writer attempts to approach the rise of Islamic groups in Egypt, through a new perspective. The rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic groups is seen as a reaction to the influx of Christian missionaries, namely Protestant evangelicals. The Muslim Brothers exploited the occasion and the turbulence of the period, to establish their own social welfare institutions to assume responsibility of the children that, according to their rhetoric, were in grave danger. This gave them a platform to build their own influence in the country and gather considerable power for a very long time afterwards.
